  • City officials are starting the planning process for South Commons around Synovus Park; they will interview developers in February and present a master plan outlining housing, restaurants and family activities by June.  WTVM
  • Columbus is hosting its 41st annual community breakfast organized by the Black History Month Observance Committee to celebrate Black history. The event invites locals to reflect, celebrate, and connect at this special gathering.  WTVM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Skechers Superstore is set to open its first Columbus store tomorrow at Columbus Park Crossing; the space once housed Conn’s HomePlus until it closed in 2024. The retailer will offer shoes, clothing, and accessories for all ages.  WTVM
  • Georgia Power says customer rates may drop as early as June after filing with the PSC — a move that could lower bills for local customers.  Columbus CEO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Benning Army Major Jake Kelly released his book, The Spurs of Service, a 100+ page collection of poems recounting his nearly 15 years of service and personal loss. The Columbus native hopes his work helps soldiers and veterans express their feelings and find comfort.  WTVM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An eighth grader from Veterans Memorial Middle School won the district spelling bee today by spelling corduroy correctly at Rainey McCullers School of the Arts — over 40 students competed, with Maitreyan Anbarasu of Britt David Elementary as runner-up and Trinity Smith of Baker Middle School placing third.  WTVM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials continue the Columbus Point-In-Time homeless count today to update records and improve services (including community outreach) across town.  WTVM

  • Officials introduced plans to redevelop South Commons, promising new retail and community spaces as part of urban uplift. Construction is set to begin after final approvals + local feedback is considered.  WTVM
