- ➤ Piedmont Columbus Regional has named the Columbus Police Department’s Community Policing Unit First Friday Heroes for March; a ceremony is set for Mar. 12 at 9:30 a.m. at the Public Safety Building (honoring their work to build community trust). Columbus CEO
- ➤ Collins visited Columbus today during a statewide veterans tour, meeting local service members and community leaders to discuss upcoming support initiatives for veterans. WTVM
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ WTVM is hosting a job fair tomorrow at Columbus State University’s Cunningham Center on Gentian Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where job seekers can network with top local employers from West Georgia - East Alabama and enjoy free parking. WTVM
- ➤ DISH Network customers lost access to WTVM on Tuesday, March 10 when a renewal agreement fell through (viewers can still use an antenna to watch the free station), so many are turning to cable or streaming alternatives. WTVM
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Georgia lawmakers passed a bill to require annual eye and ear screenings for pre-kindergarten to third grade students, making schools eligible for $15,000 each for necessary equipment. The bipartisan measure aims to catch vision issues early and improve reading and learning. Columbus CEO
- ➤ 71-year-old Glasenia Johnson is earning her master’s in special education at Columbus State this spring (using decades of experience to advocate for students with special needs). Columbus State University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Georgia's state tax collections fell to $2.12 billion in February from $2.13 billion last year, with lower individual & corporate taxes partly offset by gains in sales and motor fuel taxes. Year-to-date revenues increased by 1.6%, demonstrating mixed fiscal performance. Columbus CEO
- ➤ Columbus City Council is reviewing a renovation plan for A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium that may cost between $16.2 million and $19.5 million and add new synthetic turf, upgraded bleachers and locker rooms. City staff will soon present funding options and parts of the stadium may be ready by this fall. WTVM
- ➤ Columbus residents voiced strong concerns about the $5B Project Ruby data center during a recent city council meeting + officials plan to review the feedback in future sessions. WTVM
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Atlanta Braves are set to tour the Southeast on their Braves Country Road Trip from March through August. Columbus will host the event on May 2 during a game at Synovus Park (fans can enjoy themed photo ops, personalized postcards and a custom state poster). WTVM
