CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Muscogee County law enforcement is stepping up its crackdown on human trafficking by targeting an estimated 500,000 online predators who lure young people into sharing images and arranging meetings — Sheriff Greg Countryman said over 400,000 local ads for women are under close review. WTVM
- ➤ A suspect was arrested in connection with a 2023 Columbus murder when 24-year-old Dazaun LeShea Shelton was detained Monday for the shooting death of 43-year-old Jimmy Hearns (found with multiple gunshot wounds on Buena Vista Road on July 15) and now faces three felony counts for murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a crime. - ➤ One person was injured in a shooting on Sunday night, March 16 on the 2800 block of Victory Drive—officials have not released details about the victim or whether a suspect has been apprehended. WTVM

- ➤ Muscogee County Jail’s roof has leaked for years and will be replaced after councilors approved repairs—water damage and mold have troubled staff and inmates. Officials said there is no timetable for the new roof’s installation—work will start when funds allow. WTVM

- ➤ Warmer weather has made snakes more active in Columbus, and experts say Georgia’s 47 snake species, including seven venomous ones, usually bite only when threatened. - ➤ A SmartAsset study of 119 large US cities revealed wide differences in marriage and singlehood rates+ with married rates ranging from 22.4% to 55.9% and singles from 28.3% to 58.5%.
