COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbus homeowners are urged to be cautious when contacting contractors after severe storms, as scammers may try to take advantage of those facing repairs — Sunshine Hester from the Better Business Bureau advises getting at least three quotes and checking for proper licenses before proceeding. The alert comes during a season when powerful storms have already caused extensive damage, highlighting the need for careful research in post-storm repairs.  News 3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Liberty Theatre in Columbus will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a series of public events starting April 5 at 4 p.m.—the kickoff will feature food trucks, music and a look at the theatre’s history. Officials say the schedule will include a gala on April 11, a short-film festival on April 12, a talent show on April 26, Jazz at the Theatre on May 3, Ma Fest from May 9—May 11 and a free Praise Festival on May 17.  WTVM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The local NAACP called for an investigation into the March 11 appointment of John Anker to fill Judy Thomas’s open seat on the city council—saying the process may have broken the Georgia Open Meetings Act. Mayor Skip Henderson said his office is checking the appointment and will talk with the city attorney soon to see if further steps are needed.  WTVM
  • A bill to ban cellphones in public elementary and middle schools passed the Senate committee on Tuesday and now goes to the Senate Rules Committee for a full vote. If passed, the law will require schools to set parent communication policies during emergencies and may later extend the ban to high schools — a change lawmakers say will reduce distractions.  Columbus CEO
  • The Georgia House passed Gov. Brian Kemp’s tort reform bill on Thursday + sending it to his desk for approval. The measure overhauls Georgia’s civil litigation system, following Senate approval and a party-line committee vote despite some opposition.  WSB-TV
