COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Uptown Columbus Inc.—a nonprofit that manages downtown development and local events—announced Thursday that Columbus State University’s Assistant President of Operations, Steve Morse, has been named as its new president. The Columbus native spent 24 years at the university and will lead plans to improve public spaces and strengthen local partnerships.  News 3

  • A Columbus restaurant owner became the world pizza champion—marking the first time a local has earned this title in our city.  WTVM
  • Access Georgia Foundation has opened applications for its 2025 Founders Cohort—an eight-week program that pairs early-stage entrepreneurs with mentors and ends with an Investor Showcase for pitching to angel investors. Applicants must meet revenue and equity criteria with the deadline set for April 30—future steps include semi-finalist selection in early May and final announcements in early June.  Columbus CEO

CRIME NEWS

  • Columbus Police are searching for Kenneth Whitehead, 63, who went missing early Tuesday near the 1300 block of Jason Court at about 6:30 a.m.—if you have any information, please call 911 or the Special Victims Unit at 706-225-3449.  News 3
  • Columbus Police are searching for Charles Cumberbatch, a 75-year-old man who went missing early Thursday morning near Lawyers Lane—he was last seen at about 4:30 a.m. wearing a black fleece jacket, a gray undershirt, and blue jeans—.  News 3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Miracle Riders will ride nearly 9,500 miles through 34 states between May 2 and May 23 to raise funds for Columbus State University School of Nursing’s new NICU simulation lab, which is scheduled to open this fall. The riders — including 11 first-time participants — will stop in 32 towns to deliver personalized postcards chosen from over 40 submissions as part of a multi-year effort to reach a $1 million goal.  Columbus CEO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Bo Hatchett introduced Senate Bill 154—passed by the Senate and House—to remove U.S. Department of Education references from state law so that Georgia professionals can safely maintain their licenses amid federal changes. The bill now returns to the Senate for final review to ensure careers like social work and counseling are not disrupted.  Columbus CEO
