EDUCATION NEWS

  • State lawmakers are pushing to clear House Bill 268 before Friday, which would require schools to install a mobile panic alert system, share mapping data with GEMA and Homeland Security, and send transferring juvenile records to receiving schools — while Governor Kemp has approved a one-time $50 million grant to improve school safety. This bill is part of efforts to enhance security measures in public schools.  News 3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Social Security Administration said it has not permanently closed any field offices, including the Columbus office, amid reports causing worry among seniors and lawmakers. The agency added it is working with local lawmakers to keep services available—changes only to some low-use space for virtual hearings.  News 3
  • Congressman Sanford Bishop warned that USDA budget cuts will hurt school meal programs and local farmers + he said the cuts may reduce meals for students. He added that the changes could lower profits for farmers + the funding cuts might affect local food markets.  WTVM
  • Library officials say potential cuts to IMLS funds may cause a more than $100,000 budget shortfall at Chattahoochee Valley Libraries, which serve thousands daily with services like internet access, summer reading, and support for the blind. They urged state and federal lawmakers to act to protect these services—vital resources for local residents.  WTVM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Piedmont Columbus Regional will host its free eight-week 'Matter of Balance' course starting April 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Conference Center Atrium on Center Street to help older adults concerned about falling—registration is recommended as spaces are expected to fill quickly.  News 3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Columbus Clingstones staff are working hard to complete the $50 million renovations at Synovus Park—formerly Golden Park—for the home opener on April 15 before over 5,000 fans attend. Operations director Timmy Hinds, a 13-year minor league veteran, said his team is focused on finishing details like drink rail installations while holding constant meetings to keep work on schedule.  News 3
  • Today, the Columbus Clingstones held a media day as they took the field for their first practice of the 2025 season after nearly a year of planning.
