COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Goodwill and the Columbus Clingstones announced a three-year partnership that starts today to offer game-day promotions supporting donations and community involvement. For each Sunday home game, fans can donate gently used items for a 50% discount voucher and join Baseball Bingo for a chance to win a $50 gift card — the initiative blends baseball excitement with charitable giving.  News 3

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Georgia Power announced today plans to hire nearly 180 new lineworkers over the next several years—partnering with technical colleges to expand apprenticeship and certification programs. The hiring initiative follows recognition for the company's restorative work during Hurricane Helene last fall.  News 3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Liberty Theatre will host its 100th Centennial Gala to showcase its historic legacy and honor a long tradition in Columbus—local leaders and community members are expected to join the celebration.  Columbus CEO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Unity Elementary School in Meriweather County got a $5,000 grant to boost early reading skills and help children move from pre-k to kindergarten. The program started in March and will end in August with funds from the Georgia Foundation for Early Care+Learning and the Georgia Foundation for Public Education+.  News 3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers approved a bill that requires out-of-state investors to hire a local broker — and makes tenants give code enforcement the property manager's contact info so officials can address failing properties. They are waiting to see if Gov. Kemp will sign the measure, which is meant to help first-time homebuyers and keep rental housing in better condition.  Columbus CEO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Columbus has finished reimagining Golden Park into Synovus Park—today serving as the new home for the Atlanta Braves Double-A team—with staff putting final touches on the ballpark. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with a pregame ceremony at 6:15 p.m. and first pitch at 7:05 p.m. against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.  News 3
  • The Piedmont Classic will hold a golf tournament on April 21 and both tennis and pickleball tournaments on April 22 at the Country Club of Columbus, with registration opening at 8 a.m. for golf and tennis and pickleball registration closed — all events will raise funds for local hospitals — benefiting the John B. Amos Cancer Center and the Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital.  WTVM
  • Columbus State named Justin Hay as its new athletics director; he was deputy athletics director for external relations at Lenoir-Rhyne where he boosted fundraising and facility upgrades—Hay will officially begin his role on May 19 and is set to lead the Cougars’ 13 NCAA Division II sports programs. His appointment follows a strong record in enhancing athletic operations and engaging local communities.  Columbus State University
