CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Columbus police are asking the public for help finding 15‑year‑old Jimena Santizo who was last seen near Victory Drive on April 11 at 9 a.m.—she has black hair, brown eyes, is 4′11 and 120 pounds and anyone with information is urged to call 9‑1‑1. WTVM
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ MakeMyMove reports a growing trend of Americans leaving expensive metros for smaller communities that offer affordable living, better homeownership options, and a slower pace. Columbus is noted for its walkable downtown, modern design, and vibrant cultural scene—qualities that attract families, remote workers, and retirees seeking balance. WSB-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Columbus State University will award honorary degrees to Artist Ann Strub and former Rep. Calvin Smyre at its Spring Commencement on May 9—recognizing their contributions to the community. The event will take place on campus. WTVM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Muscogee County Sheriff's Department and the Georgia Department of Public Health will host a drug takeback drive-up and drop-off event at the Upper Level of the Columbus Health Department at 5601 Veterans Parkway from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event will allow residents to drop off expired or unused prescription and over-the-counter medicines, and Narcan will be available for distribution. - ➤ Columbus city pools and splash pads will reopen in about a month, but the city faces a lifeguard shortage as it currently employs 52 lifeguards & needs 73 more. Parks and Recreation officials will detail the shortage at today's city council meeting while residents express concern over summer safety. WTVM
- ➤ Former councilwoman Judy Thomas died Saturday at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and is remembered for her strong support of public safety efforts in Columbus. Her memorial services will be held at McMullen Funeral Home on May 6 and at St. Luke United Methodist Church on May 8 at 11:00 a.m.—a tribute to her lasting commitment to local government. WTVM
