BUSINESS NEWS

  • Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill closed permanently Tuesday, April 28 after its parent company shut down the national chain, leaving only 19 active locations from over 100 at its peak. The longtime Columbus restaurant had served the community for more than two decades.  WTVM
  • Gigi's Cupcakes at The Landings (operating nearly 14 years) is up for sale after the owners lost a family member last fall, and the bakery will keep serving customers while it searches for a new owner; the Opelika location remains unaffected.  WTVM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbus State University held its Scholastic Honors Convocation on April 24, recognizing over 100 students and faculty; Fiza Khan won the Faculty Cup and Dr. Joshua May was named Educator of the Year (the university’s top honors).  Columbus State University
  • Miracle Riders will depart Friday from Frank D. Brown Hall on Columbus State RiverPark Campus between 9 and 10 a.m. in a 21-day motorcycle ride supporting Columbus State nursing programs. The group will return on May 22 with a concert & celebration in Uptown.  WTVM
  • Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) has partnered with Sierra Pacific Windows to upskill workers in leadership and industrial maintenance. The training (designed to meet evolving workforce needs) will be offered on campus soon.  WTVM
  • Goodwill Construction Training Program now offers free intensive courses that award eight certifications in 20 days to help launch construction careers with pay up to $19 an hour for any applicant 18 or older — training is available in west central Georgia.  Columbus CEO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Car partner Nicole Gillen and health care professional Erin Crown discuss schizophrenia care and share a resource for caretakers, outlining guidance to improve patient support in Columbus (including tips on accessing services).  WTVM

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Georgia Association of Realtors holds its statewide Roadshow in Columbus today at Synovus Park, offering local real estate professionals a free four-hour training on the housing market + featuring guest speakers among seven stops across Georgia this spring.  WTVM
  • Georgia Realtors met at Synovus Park today to discuss market trends during the Realtor Roadshow. The event focused on local real estate challenges and gave agents a chance to network (sharing insights with peers).  WTVM
