COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City pools will open May 27 for summer fun after school ends, with four locations and splash pads already available at City Services Center and Carver Park. Admission ($2 to $4) applies for residents as pools remain open through Aug. 2.  WTVM
  • Pools and splash pads have opened for community use in Columbus today as families find new spots for water play. Local facilities are ready with safety measures to ensure a fun and secure environment.  WTVM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbus State alum Lena deLoache is producing M.A.C.B.E.T.H., a play that mixes Friends & Macbeth, at Georgia’s Art Farm at Serenbe from May 8 to May 17.  Columbus State University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pizza Hut and BOOK IT! are launching a summer reading program for kids. Parents can enroll children in pre-K–6 using the BOOK IT! app starting May 1, with free personal pan pizzas awarded when reading goals are met from June 1 through Aug. 31.  WTVM

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Parkinson’s Conference held at Opelika Public Library offered free workshops and community support, giving patients and families practical tools and strategies to handle daily tasks (and build social connections).  WTVM
  • John B. Amos Cancer Center will host a free skin cancer screening on May 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the second floor of June Wright’s Conference Room (in partnership with Southeast Dermatology Specialists) as part of Skin Cancer/Melanoma Awareness Month.  WTVM
