  • Wesley Glen Ministries opened a new Columbus location at 900 Front Ave, offering residential services + a Cornerstone Day Program, one-on-one mentoring and employment support for people with developmental disabilities. The Macon-based organization expanded to meet local needs.  WTVM
  • An APD officer answered a noise complaint and joined a neighborhood party today, surprising residents with unexpected camaraderie in Columbus.  WSB-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gray Media and WTVM launched the Star-Spangled Sing-Off contest that invites locals to send acapella renditions of the National Anthem to celebrate America’s 250th birthday + submissions are due by Sunday, May 31 and the winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Nashville to film a performance.  WTVM
  • Columbus State alumna Lena deLoache is producing M.A.C.B.E.T.H., a play that reimagines 'Friends' and Macbeth by reuniting alumni talent; it will debut at Art Farm at Serenbe on May 8 and run until May 17 in Chattahoochee Hills.  Columbus CEO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Columbus drivers may notice higher fuel prices at local pumps starting today as regular gas reached $4.39 a gallon after a 9-cent jump overnight; the surge is the biggest in six weeks and may lead to increased costs for travel & businesses.  WTVM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Miracle Riders left (Frank D. Brown Hall) in uptown Columbus Friday morning to begin a 9,300-mile ride that raises funds and awareness for CSU’s School of Nursing; the route includes a stop at the National Infantry Museum before they return Friday, May 22.  WTVM
  • Columbus High School senior Tum Leh is competing as co-captain at the international FIRST robotics competition in Houston (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) among 1,000 teams. He is learning STEM skills and building global networks at the event.  WTVM

  • Pinnacle Financial Partners and Synovus Bank donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief for Georgia wildfires + they offered financial assistance to team members facing hardship.  Columbus CEO

HEALTH NEWS

  • State officials are launching the Look Again campaign as temperatures rise above 85°F to remind drivers not to leave children in cars—car interiors can exceed 100°F quickly, causing heat stroke risks. The safety effort warns that young passengers suffer heat stroke faster than adults.  Columbus CEO
