- ➤ On Saturday, May 9, Columbus will host events including the National Association of Letter Carriers' food drive, a Liberty Tree dedication at the National Infantry Museum at 10 a.m., the 11th Children's Book Festival at the Public Library, and markets with a Mother's Day pop-up at Midland Commons. - ➤ George Washington Carver Victory Garden and Farm has expanded near the Marshall Success Center, now selling eggs and fresh produce while inviting community members and students to volunteer on Saturdays & learn hands-on farming skills. WTVM
- ➤ Local Vendor Village will host Mama Market on Mother's Day. Chelsea said the event will feature local vendors offering unique gifts and treats to celebrate moms (details are expected soon). WTVM

- ➤ Circle K is offering Columbus drivers a 40-cent discount per gallon today from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. during its Fuel Day event with Inner Circle members receiving early access (12:01 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and donating 10% of profits to support military families. WTVM
- ➤ A Georgia official has asked for a federal investigation into the Sysco-Restaurant Depot merger, saying the deal could lessen competition among local businesses. The request comes as authorities review its impact on Columbus commerce. Columbus CEO

- ➤ Georgia DECAL secured a 10/10 quality rating on the NIEER checklist by using TORSH coaching to boost Pre-K teacher support—marking a statewide step forward in early childhood education. Officials say the framework sets a lasting benchmark for job-embedded professional development. Columbus CEO
- ➤ Governor Kemp signed nine bills today to boost K-12 literacy and math learning in schools statewide. The laws will let districts hire literacy coaches, extend core math instruction, and limit classroom device use to support student success. Columbus CEO
- ➤ Columbus State University hosted its Employee Recognition Awards Ceremony on May 5 as part of Employee Appreciation Week. Fifteen faculty and staff received awards while over 125 employees were honored for service milestones & professional achievements. Columbus CEO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Taxpayers who filed timely returns for 2024 and 2025 will receive one-time rebates of $250 for individuals, $375 for heads of households and $500 for married couples filing jointly. The rebate, approved by lawmakers, is expected to be delivered within the coming weeks. Columbus CEO
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Registered nurse Megan Ward was named Piedmont Columbus Regional’s First Friday Hero after she stopped at a car crash on May 6 and arrived before first responders to care for an injured woman until her release; a ceremony to honor her will be scheduled later (this is her second recognition). SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Smiths Station’s varsity softball team accepted a fine and probation after self-reporting a Contest Limitation Rule violation, so they will not join the Central Regional qualifier while Auburn High School takes the playoff spot and will face Baker High School next week. WTVM
