CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives in Columbus are investigating the homicide of 18-year-old Sergio Alamo after human remains were discovered behind Kysor Warren factory in March, and forensic tests with DNA confirmed his identity and showed a bullet hole in his skull; he had been reported missing in November when he was living on the streets after leaving foster care.  WTVM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbus State has named Debra Kennedy chief of its police department—Kennedy, a two-time graduate with 33 years in law enforcement, will begin her tenure on June 1.  News 3
  • Commissioner Harper announced the 2025 Ag Week Photo Contest winners, including the Overall Winner and category-specific prizes from over 200 submitted photos. The winning photos will be featured in the Georgia Grown Magazine 2026 edition and on the department's social media channels.  Columbus CEO
  • Governor Brian Kemp signed a new law that increases prison time for fentanyl dealers after a report showed overdose deaths dropped from 110,000 in 2023 to 80,000 in 2024—grieving mother Carolyn McDermott, whose sons Gannon and Max died from fentanyl overdoses, said she feels no sympathy for dealers as her sons now lie in urns.  WSB-TV
