CRIME NEWS

  • Columbus police report that a 49-year-old political activist, Nathan Smith, was found dead in his north Columbus home from an apparent suicide late Wednesday + his body was sent to the Dekalb County crime lab for an autopsy while investigators review notes he left.  News 3

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The NAIA World Series Softball Tournament is expected to generate thousands of dollars in visitor spending—boosting local businesses—and will help strengthen Columbus’ economy. Organizers say the event will draw many visitors and support local jobs.  WTVM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students, faculty and parents at Wynnton Arts Academy gathered on May 22 to unveil a sculpture honoring Rick McKnight— an advocate for arts and education in Columbus; the design was inspired by fifth graders who drew on their experiences at the Bo Bartlett Center and the Chattahoochee River, marking a proud moment for the school community.  News 3

  • Columbus City officials announced they will host a community meeting on May 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the City Service Center—2nd Floor Council Chambers so residents can discuss the issuance of a solid waste handling permit that would expand the Columbus Pine Grove Landfill to include a composting operation.  News 3
