COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday morning in Uptown Columbus, community members gathered for a birthday celebration honoring the U.S. Army amid a collaboration between Fort Benning and the city. The planned free event—Salute to the Army 250—will take place on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the National Infantry Museum and will include live entertainment, equipment displays, food, and cake.  News 3
  • The Army 250th Birthday 5K Run event will take place in Columbus to celebrate the Army's 250th anniversary + local officials plan to announce the race route and start time soon. Community sign-ups will open early + additional event details are expected.  WTVM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Dance Academy will host its annual Dance Showcase featuring dance routines by local performers—organizers promise a lively presentation that invites community participation. The event will take place at a local venue as the academy highlights its tradition of arts education.  WTVM
  • Columbus will host the 80th Miss Georgia and Miss Georgia Teen competitions — 93 crowns will be awarded to winners as the event honors local tradition and talent.  Columbus CEO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Chris Carr sent a letter to Congressional leaders today calling for passage of H.R. 1624 to freeze H-2A guest worker wage rates—aimed at keeping costs at 2023 levels and preventing a 9.5% jump in 2025. The move is part of Carr’s continued effort to help Georgia farmers avoid rising costs amid federal mandates.  Columbus CEO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inspectors gave International Latin Food at 4724 Hamilton Road an 80 on a recent health inspection — they found the facility operated without a certified safety manager and stored raw meats improperly with corrections due in 10 days. Inspectors scored B’moski’s Flavor Wings and Cafe at 4701 St. Mary’s Road an 88 — a violation was noted when cold holding temperatures for chicken and pork were above 41 degrees.  WTVM
  • The Columbus Georgia Convention & Trade Center will host the Med Gala to gather local health professionals. Officials have not released further details (including the event schedule) (pending final arrangements).  WTVM
  • Piedmont Columbus Regional named the Columbus Fire and EMS station 5 crew — including Christopher Webb, Keith Russell, John Joshua Gonzales, Peyton Irions, D’Andrei Watson, Adam Riley and Kevin Green — as First Friday Heroes after their quick response helped a man with a heart attack get faster treatment. A ceremony to honor them will be held on June 25 at 11:30 a.m. at fire station 5 on Lynch Road in Midland.  Columbus CEO
