The Columbus Housing Authority hosted its second annual senior prom with a Roaring Twenties theme that attracted 350 attendees and required a move to a larger venue.

AARP Georgia is accepting nominations for the 2026 Andrus Award for Community Service, honoring volunteers (50+) whose unpaid work benefits communities; submissions must be in by August 15 with the winner announced in the fall.

Columbus State University is restoring Carson McCullers’ Nyack home into a study-away center that will host up to 10 students and two faculty during spring break and summer sessions (it earned a Rehabilitation Award from the Historic Society of Rockland County on May 17) while preserving the author’s legacy.

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s floating wetland trash trap at Cooper Creek Park, installed last June, has collected over 300 pounds of trash, and officials plan to install a second one by year’s end.

The trap features 29 native plants (supporting local wildlife).

Local environmental officials report trash traps on the Chattahoochee River are showing improved water quality as recent tests indicate lower pollutant levels.

The project, installed near downtown, will continue to be monitored to support cleaner water for residents and wildlife.
