COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbus Fire and EMS is mourning Firemedic Brittany Zerwick whose cause of death remains unknown—funeral will be held on July 14 at 11 a.m. at Cascade Hills Church on 727 54th Street as the department provides grief counseling to its members.  News 3
  • Mary Prince, 79, spent 54 years caring for the Carter family & she recalls how a wrongful conviction led her to work at the governor’s mansion. She began her role in Columbus and stayed with the Carters through moves from Plains to Sumter County, reflecting on a long life of service.  News 3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rap stars Jeezy and 2 Chainz will perform on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Columbus Civic Center, located at 400 4th Street. Tickets cost between $59.50 and $195.75, went on sale July 3, and doors open at 7:00 p.m.—the show starts at 8:00 p.m.  News 3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mark LaJoye filed paperwork on Friday to run for Columbus mayor one day after former city manager Isaiah Hugley did; LaJoye—who lost four runs for sheriff—expects two more candidates as qualifying begins in early March and the election is May 19.  News 3
  • South Lumpkin Road in Columbus will get a $10 million facelift to improve road conditions + safety for drivers. Officials say work will start once planning reviews are complete.  Columbus CEO
  • Former Russell County sheriff's deputy and Army veteran Mark LaJoye filed paperwork today to run for Columbus mayor. He served 40 years in the military and 13 years with Columbus PD, and he has run for sheriff in Muscogee County five times while holding a master’s law degree from St. Louis University plus a degree in criminal justice from Troy University.  WTVM
