COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday evening, about 60 to 70 Columbus residents gathered at eight protest sites on Macon and Wynnton roads to honor Congressman John Lewis—marking his fifth anniversary—and oppose cuts to Medicaid, food assistance, and education funding. Organized by Columbus GA Indivisible, the peaceful demonstration called for stronger voter rights as local communities prepare for upcoming elections.  News 3

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbus-born artist Ann Strub set a record with her multi-million planned gift to support art, music and archival programs at Columbus State University — the largest donation from an individual in the school's history. Her gift honors her Columbus roots and family legacy while promising to boost future arts programs and archive collections.  Columbus CEO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kemp announced today that he appointed Benjamin A. Land to fill the Georgia Supreme Court vacancy left by Judge Michael P. Boggs' retirement. Land, who served on the Georgia Court of Appeals since July 20th, brings 26 years of experience as a Columbus attorney to the state's highest court.  Columbus CEO
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that permits for the 2025-2026 hunting season are available on about 10,000 acres at West Point and can be bought in person at the West Point Lake Visitor Center, by phone, or by mail. Hunters must pay $25 and review maps carefully—ensuring they follow all local and state regulations.  News 3
  • Senator Jon Ossoff's push for a new Fort Benning elementary school cleared the Appropriations Committee with nearly $130 million in construction funds. He said he will bring the funding bill to the Senate floor next week before it goes to the House for negotiations.  News 3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Outdoor workers in Columbus are adjusting their work schedules as temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s, which increases the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Construction crews now start at 7 a.m. and finish by 1, while Columbus Fire & EMS advises avoiding outdoor work between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. after 12 heat-related incidents were reported from May to July 17.  WTVM
  • Peach State Health Plan spent $27.7 million from 2022 to 2024 to add Medicaid benefits that offer vision care, emergency childcare, mental health support and job training for vulnerable members. The plan updated its value added benefits for the 2025 to 2026 cycle on July 1, showing its commitment to improving access and care.  Columbus CEO
