COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spring Harbor at Green Island will celebrate its 20th anniversary on July 25 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a cruise-themed event that honors residents and team members—marking two decades as the only Life Plan Community in the area.  Columbus CEO
  • SafeHouse Ministries will close its day center at the former Rose Hill Methodist Church near Hamilton Road at the end of the month (after nearly 15 years of service) and will keep its three shelters and substance abuse program operating to serve those in need.  News 3

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday, July 20, police responded to a shooting at the Opelika gas station on Columbus Parkway where they found a 31-year-old man with gunshot wounds taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital—on Monday, officers arrested 28-year-old Mykiel Sanchez Holmes on an attempted murder charge after learning he and the victim had a previous altercation.  WTVM
  • On July 16-17, Troup County deputies arrested 32 people on charges of prostitution, pimping and drug possession — the investigation uncovered human trafficking victims and possible traffickers, with three suspects from Alabama and two from Columbus.  WTVM
  • Columbus Police responded to a shooting in the 6100 block of Stone Way Drive on July 22nd that injured one person and the Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the case.  News 3

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbus artist Chris Johnson painted a new mural in midtown on July 22—his work now adds a fresh splash of color to the local art scene.  News 3

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sally Little League invites Columbus youth to register for its fall ball league offering baseball, softball and T-Ball with costs of 60 dollars per player and 50 dollars per player for teams of up to 12 children ages 3 to 16. Registrations must be completed online or by calling Jonmekia at 706.442.3536 or Brooke at 229.331.4963 before August 23.  News 3
