COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbus Clingstones will host Safe Kids Columbus night on Aug. 22 at 7:05 p.m. at Synovus Park where kids will get free bicycle helmets for the first 50 and free pedestrian reflectors while supplies last, and parents can visit a vehicle safety station for a chance to win car seats + booster seats or a $50 Clingstones prize package announced during the game.  Columbus CEO
  • Goodwill of the Southern Rivers announced it will open an opportunity center on South Lumpkin Road in South Columbus—bringing free direct services like job training, education, and skill-building programs closer to local residents. The center is equipped with enhanced learning technology from a J.M. Smucker Company donation and will host programs for at-risk youth and young adults while planning a ribbon-cutting event later.  News 3

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities in Columbus are joining Coweta County deputies in a manhunt for 20-year-old Sacario Hill, who ran from officers on Thursday and was last seen near Potts Road — Emmett Young Road; he is wanted on six counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a crime.  WTVM
  • Columbus Police are searching for 36-year-old Tenisha Thomas, last seen wearing a black tank top and black tights near the 400 block of 29th Avenue on July 20 at 3:00 p.m., and they urge anyone with information to call 911 or contact the CPD Special Victims Unit.  News 3
  • Authorities are investigating a shooting that injured a 25-year-old woman in Phenix City on Thursday at Eagle Landing Apartments on 400 Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway; she was transported by a private vehicle to Piedmont Columbus Regional.  WTVM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Labor said that the Columbus area recorded a 4.2% unemployment rate in June—a three-tenths point rise from May. The labor force increased by 1,190 to 129,725, with small gains in employed residents and total jobs.  Columbus CEO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Georgia is beginning a new school year with laws to boost school safety and improve learning for students. House Bill 874 now requires AEDs, emergency drills, and quick transfer of student records while Senate Bill 123, House Bill 268, and the Distraction Free Education Act set new rules for attendance, safety measures, and cell phone free zones—efforts that follow several bills signed by Governor Kemp earlier—ensuring schools have updated protocols.  News 3

  • The Columbus Department warned drivers that school enforcement cameras will be installed ahead of the new school year on Aug. 4 — CPD Cpl. Aaron Hoffa told WRBL News 3 that strict school zone rules might soon change from warnings to citations if drivers ignore safety protocols — officials aim to improve zone safety ahead of classes resuming.  News 3
