EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, GaDOE allocated $48,236,712 in federal funds to 21st Century Community Learning Centers to support afterschool and summer programs—using carryover funds to cover lower Title I funding—following State School Superintendent Richard Woods' recommendation.  Columbus CEO
  • MCSD has rolled out a new rule that stops students from using phones during class to keep lessons focused—teachers will enforce the policy starting immediately. This change is aimed at reducing distractions for better learning.  WTVM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Muscogee County jail is facing air conditioning issues amid high heat in the Chattahoochee Valley; Sheriff Greg Countryman said the jail has notified Columbus government and is using fans and cold beverages + an open cooling area to help inmates stay safe+.  News 3
  • Officials announced on Wednesday that the U.S. Military will conduct essential nighttime training in Columbus from today through Sunday, with air mobility operations and ground-based close-quarter battle training that includes simulated small arms fire. The exercise will have robust safety measures to minimize community impact — no public viewing opportunities are available.  News 3
  • Columbus police in the Community Policing Unit worked with homeless individuals near the closed Sonic on Victory Drive on Wednesday by speaking with a distressed man and referring him to Home for Good and Valley Healthcare. City officials will revisit a proposed ordinance in two weeks that would make camping on public land illegal—an approach that blends enforcement with care—aiming to balance community safety and support.  News 3
