  • Paws Humane Society declared a state of emergency on Aug 19 when 547 animals were in care and staff had to set up temporary crates as they awaited help to open 100 more kennel spaces — the shelter is urgently asking locals to adopt, foster, or volunteer to support their work.  WTVM

  • Firefighters responded to an overnight structure fire near the area of 16th Street—3rd Avenue as officials worked to assess the damage.  WTVM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hills and Dales Estate is a historic home shaped by four generations of the Callaway family — it stands as a living legacy in Columbus. Local visitors enjoy exploring its well-preserved architecture and rich history.  WTVM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia Power said its electric rates will remain frozen for the next three years and advised customers to change their air-filter regularly and close blinds to keep hot air out. The company also urged turning off lights when not in use to help save on summer power bills.  Columbus CEO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbus High School is ranked the second best in the state and 78th in the nation in the 2025-2026 U.S. News and World Report ranking. The ranking improved from last year's 101 placement—Principal Sonya Allen said the school works hard to keep up its high standards.  News 3
  • Columbus State University hired Dr. Shanna Widener from the University of West Georgia as its new vice president for enrollment management, effective Sept. 1—she will join President Stuart Rayfield’s team and replace Dr. Chip Reese.  Columbus CEO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman invites children in pre-K through 6th grade to name his office’s new bear mascot—a contest where the top three names win prizes of $300, $200, and $100 and are recognized by Columbus Councilor Glenn Davis.
