  • Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital honored 22-year-old Zion Reed as August’s First Friday Hero after he quickly stopped a car driven by a seizing woman near Bryant Lake subdivision in May—his fast action prevented a crash with a dump truck and kept the driver safe.  News 3

CRIME NEWS

  • Columbus police said a teen was shot on MLK Jr. Blvd. — investigators are gathering evidence while the injured youth receives treatment.  WTVM
  • Columbus police confirm one person died after a shooting near Shirley B. Winston Park on the 5000 block of Stream Mill Road — investigations remain active.  News 3
  • Columbus police are investigating a shooting at the Virginia Arms apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard where officers have set up a heavy presence—no injuries have been reported.  WTVM
  • Officials reported that a shooting occurred at Shirley Winston Park yesterday—police maintained a large presence and advised residents to avoid the area while the victim's condition remains unknown.  WTVM

HEALTH NEWS

  • AquaStar USA Corp. is recalling about 26,460 Cocktail Shrimp packages and 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Shrimp due to potential cesium-137 contamination—products sold at Walmart and other stores in Georgia from July 31 to Aug. 16 are affected. The FDA is investigating the reports—consumers are urged to return any affected shrimp for a refund as no illnesses have been reported.  WSB-TV
  • Inspectors at Office Sports Bar and Grill on Northlake Parkway gave the restaurant an 87 after they found fruit flies in the main kitchen, and the owner must fix the violation within 10 days & additional issues were noted such as an employee using an electronic tobacco device while preparing food and a leaking walk-in cooler.  WTVM
  • An inspector found pests in the main kitchen of the Columbus sports bar 9 & Dine, raising concerns about its hygiene. Health officials will conduct a follow-up inspection to decide if further actions are needed.  WTVM
  • Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital will offer free prostate cancer screenings for men 40-69 on Sept. 20 at the John B. Amos Cancer Center from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—no registration or appointment is needed.  News 3
