ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Investigators Timothy Darden and Maximus Raniero and Corporal Colby Saunders were named First Friday Heroes after they helped rescue occupants from an SUV rollover on Sept. 5 at a convenience store on Whitesville Road—pushing the vehicle upright with citizens—and ensuring EMS attended quickly to the driver who suffered a panic attack.  Columbus CEO

CRIME NEWS

  • FBI Atlanta is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of two unknown suspects who killed Amit Patel when he was shot outside a bank on Buena Vista Road in Columbus in 2021.  News 3
  • Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office identified 34-year-old Christian Cruz-Benitez—the suspect behind bomb threats at a construction site near the city government center on Sept 4—and arrested him, charging him with a felony count of terroristic threats.  News 3

  • United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth visited Fort Benning Thursday as new Army officers graduated and he spoke at the Officer Candidate School. He watched soldiers fire new service weapons — a sign of his support and a nod to the base's long history.  WTVM

  • Columbus Consolidated Government will hold its annual surplus equipment auction at the Columbus Civic Center’s Lot D on September 13 at 10:00 a.m.—featuring construction equipment, tractors, buses, pickup trucks, and other assets no longer needed by the city. An in-person preview will occur on September 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on September 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.—registration is available on site.  Columbus CEO
  • Columbus Consolidated Government filed a lawsuit on Aug 28 against Norfolk Southern and other companies over the use of city property for non-public services that break an agreement dating from the 1840s—Mayor Skip Henderson said the city plans to seek discussions to clarify future use.  WTVM
