EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Columbus State University, over 100 boxes of military documents from the post-Vietnam War era have been added to the archive. The collection (donated by the Marsh family, retired Army social worker Jim Martin, and former Fort Benning commander Patrick Donahoe) includes records that capture major changes in Army technology and operations for future research.  News 3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Columbus City Council unanimously approved a gun safety proposal that would ban carrying firearms in recreation centers and sent it to state lawmakers for the 2026 legislative session — Councilor Toyia Tucker said the measure protects employees following a fatal incident — and it will be reviewed in Atlanta.  News 3
  • Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman introduced the new deputy mascot—Deputy Scogee Bear—at the Columbus City Council meeting on Monday evening after a youth naming contest. Nine-year-old Loghan Cutter won $300 for his winning name while other youth earned prizes, and city leaders including Mayor Skip Henderson showed support.  News 3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Columbus Piedmont Regional is hosting a free prostate screening for local men to check for early signs of health issues—community members can get cost-free tests and health information at the event.  WTVM
  • Today, community members and organizers began the inaugural Sickle Cell Walk in Columbus to raise funds and awareness for sickle cell disease—participants will follow a set route and join in activities that support research efforts. The event aims to unite locals in advocating for better health education and support.  WTVM

  • On Tuesday, Columbus Clingstones announced that pitcher Ian Mejia was named to the Southern League All-Star Team — the first in franchise history — after posting a 12 to 2 record and a 2.62 ERA.  News 3
