COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Exchange Club of Columbus will host a Hot Dog Jamboree event in early October—organizers plan to offer residents a unique community gathering, with more details expected soon.  WTVM
  • Back Columbus Blue will host its 4th annual golf fundraiser for first responders on Oct. 2 at Bull Creek Golf Course at 7333 Lynch Road in Midland—tee times are at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The nonprofit will use the funds to buy essential equipment and improve mental health resources for local police, fire, and EMS workers.  WTVM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Soul Fest, a popular local festival, has been rescheduled to November 29 at Columbus Civic Center after being postponed from its original late-August date. The event will feature live performances by King George, Wilson Meadows, Calvin Richardson, and Mike Clark Jr. — it will also include a $2,500 line dance competition and offer refunds for August 30 ticket holders until October 10 if purchased via Ticketmaster or Columbus Civic Center Box Office.  News 3

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Labor reported that the Columbus metro area recorded a 4.1% unemployment rate in August, up 0.1 from July but down from 4.6% a year ago. The labor force dropped by 487 while total jobs increased by 300 to 123,800—showing steady progress despite small month-to-month changes.  Columbus CEO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colony Bank is accepting nominations for the 2026 Colony Leadership Academy, a year-long program that gives high school juniors leadership training and hands-on industry experience — nominations remain open through October 3 with final selections set for late November. The program partners with the University of Georgia’s J.W. Fanning Institute to offer professional development and scholarship opportunities.  Columbus CEO
  • At its 10th annual luncheon on September 25, Columbus State University announced that Girls In The Game exceeded $1.3M in donations to fund academic scholarships for female student-athletes—supporting them in the classroom and on the field over the past decade.   • University of Georgia interior design students reimagined a historic gas station at Fort Benning into a workspace and artifact exhibit as part of their hands-on project with military officials—students took field trips, met regularly with leaders, and applied sustainable design protocols. The project gave the fort new ideas for future renovations while enriching the students' real-world learning.  Columbus CEO
  • Goodwill of the Southern Rivers awarded nearly $200K in scholarships to 399 local students across 50 counties—each recipient got a $500 award from the Round Up Scholarship funded by shoppers rounding up their purchases.  WTVM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A proposal before Congress may change Fort Benning back to Fort Moore as part of the defense spending bill. The change would honor Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife and follows a March reversal by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—lawmakers are still debating the proposal.  News 3
  • Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson said the search for a new city manager is narrowed to five finalists—interviews will begin next month while the names remain private. He expects to advise the council with a candidate by early November so that a new manager will be in place by mid-January.  News 3

HEALTH NEWS

  • Columbus doctors are using gene therapy to help treat patients with sickle cell disease during Sickle Cell Awareness Month — Resa Lord from Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital said patients must meet strict criteria, including prior chemotherapy, to receive treatments like Lyfgenia.  News 3
