CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Columbus Museum announced that it is presenting Hadieh Shafie: Beautiful Words — the first solo museum exhibition in the U.S. for internationally acclaimed Iranian-American artist Hadieh Shafie. The show brings together her celebrated paper scroll works and large-scale reliefs and is seen as a milestone in her artistic career.  News 3
  • WTVM’s Barbara Gauthier was honored at the 12th annual Whitney M. Young Junior National Award Dinner on Oct. 1—she was recognized for her hard work and community service.  WTVM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity will launch its OmegaSTEM program at Shaw High School on Friday morning and at George Washington Carver High School later that day—aiming to teach about science and the effects of synthetic marijuana use while engaging about 200 students ahead of its 62nd Georgia state meeting.  News 3

  • Columbus leaders are in Chattanooga this week to tour a minor league ballpark and a mixed-use development as they review plans for a $400 million entertainment complex near Synovus Park—Mayor Skip Henderson said the next steps include issuing proposals and aiming to break ground in early 2027.  News 3
  • Officials with Piedmont Columbus Regional named MCSO Sgt. Earl Osbon October’s First Friday Hero after he rescued Deputy Marcus Street’s father from a car on Macon Road near Garrett Road before it was hit by a train — a ceremony will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office headquarters to honor his actions.  News 3
  • Local government offices in Columbus face service delays from the shutdown—officials plan to review solutions to support community operations.  WTVM
  • Attorney General Chris Carr sent a letter to the FCC supporting a rulemaking that would let law enforcement in state prisons and jails use jamming technology to block contraband cell phones—Carr said the measure is needed to prevent violent acts linked to unauthorized phone use, and he was joined by attorneys general from several states.  Columbus CEO
