COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A domestic violence awareness walk and vigil in Columbus invites residents to join a whimsical 5K in pajamas to support survivors—local organizers Mill District and Big Dog Run lead the effort to raise funds and promote safety. WTVM
- ➤ A new opportunity center opened on Lumpkin Road in south Columbus to provide access to community services & support for local residents. The center is set to become a hub for neighborhood outreach and available resources. WTVM
- ➤ Chattahoochee County will hold a vigil today to honor former high school Coach Michael Nash—whose leadership touched many students—as community members gather to pay tribute. WTVM
- ➤ Barbara Gauthier was named Piedmont's Survivor of the Year at the annual luncheon. WTVM
- ➤ Heather Jeffcoat shared tips on keeping mobility as you age while local authorities identified a man who died from a gunshot at a Brookstone Blvd home. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Columbus State University held safety resource fairs at its main campus and student housing to connect students with services such as Counseling Center, Residence Life, Title IX and University Police—this event followed an alleged student assault downtown and is part of its routine safety outreach. - ➤ The Muscogee County School District reached a record-high graduation rate of 96.1% for the 2024-2025 school year, up two points from last year and 8.9 points above the state average (all high schools earned rates above 92% with Columbus High and Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts at 100%). - ➤ The Columbus Clingstones’ mascot Fuzzy read to nearly 20 children at North Columbus Branch Library on Tuesday during the Simple Steps Storytime program—featuring reading, singing, dancing, and crafts that supported early literacy. - ➤ Dr. Rhonda Randall explained health insurance open enrollment as a United Healthcare representative offered tips on choosing plans & lowering costs for local residents. WTVM
- ➤ Dr. Arlena Williams and Tracy Belt announced that the Fall Into Wellness Health Equity Event — scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Enrichment Services Program on Cross Country Drive — will provide free diapers, mental health support, medical screenings, fresh fruits and vegetables, youth activities and job readiness training. - ➤ In its 30th year, the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame announced a class of five inductees—Mark Levy, Aileen Morales, John Shinkle, Bobby Wright, and Carolyn Wright—who will be honored on Feb. 21 at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center. The inductees were chosen for their athletic achievements and dedication to community service. News 3
