  • Columbus State University is mourning Professor Erica Anderson who was accidentally shot by a woman inside her home in the 1600 block of 17th Avenue just after midnight Monday—she had started teaching in the College of the Arts and made a deep impression on her students while leaving behind a husband and three children.  News 3

FINANCE NEWS

  • Columbus-based Synovus Securities Inc. was fined $315k by FINRA for alleged forgery and falsification of e-signatures—FINRA imposed the penalty after evidence of document manipulation was found.  WTVM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Columbus restaurant owner brought concerns about 17 years of city-owned magnolia trees covering his business sign to City Council on Tuesday morning. General Manager Jose Altamirano said the city will review tree ordinances and trimming practices—an idea supported by Councilor Bruce Huff to help small businesses.  News 3
  • Local nonprofit founder DeWayne Webb has offered to help families hit by the government shutdown that has affected workers at Fort Benning—he said many feel too unsure to request help even when facing essential bills. Webb, whose wife was furloughed when the shutdown began, urged those struggling with food, healthcare, or utilities to reach out—no request is too small.  News 3
