COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity started building seven affordable homes for low-income families in the Nueva Valley Subdivision on Dorsey Drive and Pine Valley Drive when volunteers from AFS Foundation & Waterproofing Specialists worked on the foundation phase on Friday. Each 1,300-square-foot home will be sold based on income and allows buyers to choose features that suit their needs.  Columbus CEO
  • SafeHouse Ministries held a ribbon cutting for its new childcare and early learning center Bright Futures of Columbus, which will serve children from 0 months to 12 years at 1342 17th Street—back building of The Fort Church. The center will open soon and offer care from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. with after-school and sick child care options.  WTVM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Georgia's film industry remains strong as state tax credits help attract many projects even though Marvel is filming less overseas. More than 245 projects were filmed last year and productions spent over $2.5 billion in the state — a strong dollar challenges some filmmakers.  News 3

CRIME NEWS

  • One week ago, Columbus State professor Erica Bascom Anderson was accidentally shot and killed inside her Lakebottom area home when her roommate mistook her for an intruder, and police are investigating while her family and neighbors support her grieving husband and children.  News 3

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • METRA and consultant Foursquare ITP will hold public meetings on October 29 at the City Service Center at 3111 Citizens Way from 4:00 p.m. — 6:00 p.m. and on October 30 at the METRA Transfer Center at 814 Linwood Blvd to gather transit feedback. Community members who cannot attend in person can join the virtual option to share their input about future transit services.  Columbus CEO

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new Pew Research study finds that excessive screen time is linked to poor mental health in kids, with four out of 10 parents wishing they had limited digital use. More than half of parents want tech companies and lawmakers to act, and a new law will ban personal devices in K-8 classrooms starting in July 2026—a step to help reduce cyberbullying and improve sleep.  News 3

  • Softball is boosting Columbus' economy as the GHSA state tournament returns to the South Commons Softball Complex, where over 30 teams are staying at local hotels and restaurants this week. The tournament will kickoff next Wednesday—October 29—drawing fans whose spending supports the community.  News 3
