COMMUNITY NEWS

  • With freezing temperatures coming next week, the Columbus Police Department’s Community Policing Unit has partnered with The Rock Shop to collect blankets, coats, gloves, socks and hand warmers for the unhoused as the Safe House Day Center remains closed; donations will be accepted at The Rock Shop, which is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday — community members can help keep neighbors warm during the cold spell.  News 3

  • Solar panel maker Qcells said its facilities in Cartersville and Dalton will temporarily reduce work hours and furlough employees—delayed U.S. Customs shipments slowed production—which the company expects to normalize in the coming weeks.  WSB-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school and college students joined area business leaders at the 35th annual Cufflinks and Pearls networking event held Thursday as part of Fountain City Classic week in Columbus. The panel provided career advice and training with tips on learning new tools and focusing on controllable factors—helping students plan for their futures.  WTVM
  • Columbus State University scientists have identified a 115-million-year-old shark vertebra fossil that shows giant sharks existed 15 million years earlier than previously thought. The research team, including Dr. Michael Newbrey (a leading expert) and Tatianna Blake (a doctoral candidate), estimated the shark reached 27 feet and weighed over three tons.  News 3

  • Today, shareholders of Pinnacle Financial Partners and Synovus Financial Corp. approved the merger with over 91% of votes cast during separate meetings.   • Hardaway High School Head Football Coach Will Whilden stepped down from his role leading the Hawks football team today, as announced by the Muscogee County School District. The school will begin its search for a new coach immediately.  WTVM
